Turkey lost 2-0 to Portugal in their EURO 2008 opening match at Group A with two second-half strikes coming from Pepe and substitute Raul Meireles.

On 61st minute Pepe put Portugal ahead, carrying the ball forward with an assuredness not usually associated with centre-halves, played a one-two on the edge of the box with Nuno Gomes and burst through to finish past Turkey goalkeeper Volkan Demirel. Turkey's hopes of snatching a late equaliser vanished with Meireles, who doubled the lead in added time, sliding the ball into an empty net after Moutinho's trickery had taken out Volkan.

Turkey will player second Group A match on 11 June, Wednesday against Switzerland who lost 1-0 to Czech Republic in their first game.
