Kálmán Mészöly, one of the former coaches of our National Team, passed away at the age of 81. The Hungarian coach served in our National Team for 4 months in 1985, and managed the team during 1986 World Cup Qualifiers in the games we played against Northern Ireland and Switzerland.

Mészöly, who played only for Vasas in his country during his professional football career between 1959-1972, won four championships with this team in 1961, 1962, 1962, and 1966. In 1962, he was named as the player of the year in his country, and took his place among the legendary defenders of Hungary.

Mészöly, who got 61 international caps, won the bronze medal with Hungary in 1964 European Championship. He took part in the team that reached the quarter-finals in 1962 and 1966 World Cups. Mészöly, who served as the coach of the Hungarian National Team in three different periods, managed to take the team to the 1982 World Cup Finals.

Mészöly, who also managed Fenerbahçe and Altay between 1985-1986 in Turkey, had been receiving treatment at the hospital for a while due to health problems.

As the Turkish Football Federation, we are deeply saddened to hear the loss of Mészöly and we send our condolences to his family, relatives, and Hungarian football community.
