The 18th edition of 2017 Mercedes-Benz Aegean Cup which is held in Turkey (Aydın and Torbalı this year); has started today with the first group matches.

This year's Mercedes-Benz Aegean Cup has been participated by six U16 National Teams which are Turkey, Kosovo, Slovakia, Ukraine, Greece and Montenegro.

Importance and history of the tournament

Mercedes-Benz Aegean Cup is among prestigious international tournaments in this age category. The tournament will continue its traditional to be a showcase for various 20 youth national teams participation since the past.

Started under the name "Bora Öztürk Tournament" in 1999 with the participation of Turkey, Romania and Russia, is being organized as "Aegean Cup" since 2002 and missed in 2005. Turkey took part in all past tournaments as hosts, Ukraine is the most participated visitors team in the tournament with 14 participation. Ukraine followed by Belgium and Greece with 13 times. Romania, Czech Republic also reached double digits with taking part 11 times. France 10, Norway 8, Russia 5, Netherlands and Denmark 4, USA and Scotland 3, Azerbaijan 2, Switzerland, Israel, Spain, Slovakia, Egypt and Belarus taking part once.

Originally played as a U15 tournament, Mercedes-Benz Aegean Cup's age level was firstly increased to U17 in 2002 before being played as U16 level since 2004. In this period, Turkey lifted the trophy for seven times. As the first winner of the tournament, Turkey is also the last champion of the tournament. With five in a row, France follow Turkey closely by six titles whereas, USA, Ukraine and Russia lifted the trophy once.

So far, Turkey played 66 matches in the tournament's history and recorded 44 wins, 15 draws, 7 defeats with scoring 143 goals and conceding 58 goals in those matches.

Turkey 4-0 Kosovo

In Group A. Turkish U16 National Team, coached by Ahmet Ceyhan, beat Kosovo 4-0. The match was played in Altınordu Metin Oktay Facilities, Torbalı, İzmir and Turkey's goals came from Ali Yavuz Kol (Min. 7), Leard Sadriu (Min. 39-own goal), Atakan Gündüz (Min. 43) and Oğuzhan Akgün (Min. 47).

In the day's first match of Group B, Greece beat Ukraine 1-0. The match was played in Altınordu Metin Oktay Facilities, Torbalı, İzmir and Greece's goal came from Polykarpos Alexandropoulos (Min. 38).
