UEFA EURO24 Bid Brochure

68 ECOLOGICAL BALANCE, CLEAN ENERGY ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY PLANT MORE TREES We will plant 10 million sapling trees in the name of every ticket holder all across Turkey to ensure UEFA EURO 2024 is memorable for generations to come. ACHIEVE 168% INCREASE IN RENEWABLE ENERGY Turkey is one of the most advantageous countries in Europe in terms of renewable energy resources such as solar, wind, hydroelectric, geothermal, biomass, waves and currents, which build a reliable and safe future for energy. We increased our capacity for renewable energy generation by 168% from 2002 to 2016. In Konya, we will set up the largest solar power plant in the world in an area of 19.2 km 2 . This remarkable plant will generate around 1.7 billion kWh electric energy every year to meet the electricity requirements of c.600k domiciles. USE MORE NATURAL RESOURCES Our energy transition strategy is to use our natural resources as much as possible, generating on-site and off-site renewable energy. Turkey has a strong combination of natural energy resources sunlight, water, and wind, and we will specify that energy for the tournament must come from sustainable sources, including solar power, bio-solar roofs, and rainwater harvesting. OPTIMISE GENERATORS Our generator strategy will make sure that only the energy that is required is used. We will use eco-friendly quiet invertor generators, and put them in stand-by mode overnight. GENERATE ENERGY We will create kinetic energy by installing special tiles around the stadium that store the energy and transform it to use in lighting. This approach will be even more effective when the facilities are open to public following the UEFA EURO 2024 tournament as part of our healthy lifestyle legacy. REDUCE, REUSE, RECOVER, AND RECYCLE Within the scope of the 2023 Development Goals and alignment with the Water Reuse Programme, Turkey has set its targets for sustainable delivery of secure water supplies and taken necessary actions. For efficient use of fresh water in stadiums, water systems will follow effective maintenance as well as water management by installing infrared movement detectors, metered faucets and high efficiency water restrictors through timed-flow valves. Unused materials will be returned to the providers. PROMOTE SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORT SYSTEMS The recently constructed underground systems (metro) in İstanbul and Ankara use low emission modern carriages. In İstanbul, ferries comprise an important part of the integrated public transport system; the ferries in İstanbul will be eco-friendly thanks to diesel-electric propulsion system. ɓ 7KH H[LVWLQJ OLJKW UDLO V\VWHPV ZLOO be extended in all host cities to be connected to the stadiums. ɓ $OO WKH EXVHV EHLQJ DGGHG IRU WKH tournament will be hybrid electric or solar-charged and integrated within the existing network system. Designated bus lanes for matchdays will be assigned. ɓ 'HVLJQDWHG SHGHVWULDQ DQG ELF\FOH pathways will be provided for direct access to stadiums and fan zones to promote ‘fan walks’ and ‘fan bike ways’. Bicycle stations and safe parking spaces will be built near all stadiums and fan zones. ɓ 7XUNLVK 6WDWH 5DLOZD\V LV H[SDQGLQJ its routes, developing strategies and promoting travel by rail, reducing the share of driving, bus trips and air travel during the tournament. ɓ 7KH IUHTXHQF\ RI WUDQVSRUWDWLRQ (frequency of travels) will be increased and seats will be added in public means of transportation where possible to service the extra crowd in the host cities. Turkey became a founding member of International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) on 26 January 2009. One of the targets of the Renewable Energy Action Plan (2013/2023) is to achieve 30% of renewable energy in the electricity generation.
