TRAVEL BY TRAIN Turkey boasts a railway network that is actively used, subject to continuous improvement. The Government of the Republic of Turkey aims to increase both passenger and freight usage of the railway network. Host cities will be connected through high-speed trains by 2023 when the country will achieve a total of 1 billion passenger capacity per year owing to an investment worth €24 bn. Currently, the high-speed train system is active in the route through İstanbul, Kocaeli, Eskişehir, Ankara and Konya. Based on the ongoing investments, Bursa, Antalya, Gaziantep and Trabzon will be incorporated into this line by 2023, enabling visitors to travel between those destinations by means of high-speed train. TRAVEL BY PLANE Turkey’s target for 2023 will achieve 60 operational international airports throughout the country, with a combined capacity of 350 million passengers per year, representing €24 bn of investment. The country will also extend its domestic flight network from 55 airports to 63. The most significant aviation investment in Turkey is the construction of the largest European airport in İstanbul. Turkish Airlines flies to 120 countries and 253 airports; one of the highest number of destinations in the world. TRAVEL BY BUS Buses are the most popular type of public transport. Turkey has an extensive bus network and plans to invest more than €65 bn in highways to make public transport even more comfortable by 2023.
